April 2012 Minutes

BPCA – 4/3/12

A meeting of the Broadview Park Civic Association was called to order by President David Nielsen at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, April 3, 2012, atSunviewPark.  Board members present were: David, Jan Washburn, Nancy Walton, Linda Flanders, and Paula Rivera.

Following the opening, David introduced BSO Chief Dunbar who distributed an invitation to a Town Hall Meeting on Wed. April 11th, 6:30 PM at the African-American Research Library.  Detective Vince Coldwell reported that there have been seven residential burglaries, 1 business burglary, and four car burglaries since his last report.  Three years ago there were 16-30 burglaries a month.  He has reduced that to 3–5 burglaries a month now. When one member suggested that an E-mail go out when there were reports of burglars, he distributed instructions to sign up for BSO’s Cybervisor alerts at www.sheriff.org/cyborvisor.  Lt. Jackson reminded us “If you see something, say something.”  Dave said Lt. Jackson meets regularly with the homeowner association presidents.

Chief of Operations for BSO Fire/Rescue, Mike Cassano, reported that our firefighters are now back at Station 23.  He said theDaviefirefighters had been good hosts to our men while Station 23 was under repair.

Micah Smith, Enrique Zelayah, and Matthew Coyle of the county’s Environmental Protection Department gave a brief presentation on energy saving and tips for going green.  Once again the county will offer rebates for purchasing energy star appliances and installing solar heaters.  They presented each attendee with two of the new energy saving fluroscent bulbs.  Incandescent bulbs will no longer be sold.

Traci Pollard and Brady Fernando gave us an update on the East/West Transit plan.  They have narrowed the choices down to two routes.  They distributed forms for attendees to give their comments or enter comments on transit website. Europerelies heavily on public transportation. With current outrageous gas prices, Americans need to get out of their cars.

Dave expressed his thanks to Juan Formoso and all those who helped with the community clean-up which was very successful with 42 volunteers.

Dave reminded us that our June 5th meeting will include election of officers and invited volunteers to serve on the board.  Also, annual dues of $10 per family will be due at that time.

There was no further business and the meeting adjourned.

                                                                                    Jan Washburn, Secretary
