BPCA – June 7, 2016

 

            A meeting of the Broadview Park Civic Association was called to order at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, June 7th , 2016 by Dan Fitzgerald, President.  Other officers and board present were Nancy Walton Linda Flanders, Joyce McGinnis, Juan Formoso, Susan Robinson, Carolyn Lockerd and Jan Washburn.  BSO Sheriff Scott Israel spoke to the members.  He is running for re-election in November with 37 years in law enforcement.  He promised that he would make sure that crime is reduced.  He has created a successful civil service program for minors who have committed a misdemeanors

            BSO Sergeant Dunham who works the night shift (5 pm to 5 am) reported that there had been two burglaries, two car burglaries, and a robbery in which three men robbed a man of his wallet at 17th Street and 43rd Avenue.  He said their best tips and information come from the public.. The non-emergency phone number is 954-764 4357.  Headquarters is 954-321-4800 or 4801 for the district chief.

            Niki Velez, code enforcement officer, said there are a number of commercial vehicle violations, as well as damaged, wrecked, or non-working cars.  Her goal is to clean up the street by the school.  One member reported that Sean Coneron is running a homeless shelter with 14 to 18 people at 4361 SW 25th Street.  When the city of Hollywood bought him out, he had set up a shelter in a motel upstate, but now he’s back.  He wants to expand.  Niki said they couldn’t prove these people weren’t family.  He has money and it is expensive to fight him.

            Juan Formoso reported that the winner of the association’s Jack Washburn Memorial Scholarship was Shayla Jean Baptiste who was born and raised in Broadview Park.  She attended Stranahan and plans to go to FAU to become a nurse practitioner.  She was excited and very grateful.  Apparently no students at South Plantation High applied for the scholarship.

            Gabriel Pellegrino, manager of Sunview, said he had applied for a grant for a dog park.  $25,000 to $10,000,000 if selected.

            Election of officers and board was held.  Nominees were: Pres. Dan Fitzgerald; Vice Pres. Uri Ostrovsky; Secretary, Carolyn Lockerd; Treasurer, Jan Washburn; Finance Sect., Nancy Walton; Three Year Board Members: Bill Hoy, Susan Robinson.  The members approved the slate.  Board Members with two years remaining are Dave Nielsen, Juan Formoso, and Joycie McGinnis.  With One More Year is Linda Flanders.   There are three vacancies on the board.

            Barry Stearns of the Peters Road Volunteer Fire Department which owns the building, Fire Station 23, reported that the county renewed its lease of the building and the Volunteers have approved their plans for improvements and the permit for the work.   The Volunteers  signed the revised plans in April but have not heard back from the county.  The county has set aside $180,000 for the work.

            The meeting was then adjourned for refreshments in celebration of the association’s 60th anniversary.  Old Bees were set out on the table so members could read about the early history of the group.
